Each Beach Writers workshop session runs for ten weeks, meeting in a private oceanfront home in Daytona Beach Shores. Writers of all genres, styles and levels are welcome.
9:50 am: Participants begin to arrive, socialize, choose their seats
10:00 am: Meeting begins promptly with welcome and introductory comments
10:05 am: Facilitator provides a writing prompt, and participants write either to the prompt or free write (writer's choice) for a designated period of time (may range 20 to 40 minutes). Participants are free to remain in their chosen seats or to find another spot that inspires them - perhaps outside on the lanai or even the beach?
10:45 am: After a five minute "time's up" warning, participants come back together and, if they wish, share their new writing aloud. The facilitator and other participants will provide positive feedback.
11:40 am: Group breaks for light refreshments, socializing
11:55 am: Meeting resumes. Facilitator and participants share any writing-related news
Noon: Manuscript critique of one writer's 20 page (or less) manuscript (distributed in advance at prior meeting; writers will sign up for manuscript submission dates at first meeting of session). Critiquing begins by writer reading a short passage aloud from the manuscript, after which the facilitator and other participants discuss the manuscript and provide feedback as requested by the writer (i.e., only positive or both positive and constructive criticism).
Participants are requested and expected to arrive at the meeting prepared for the discussion, meaning (1) they have read the manuscript in advance, and (2) made written comments on the manuscript to be returned to the writer at the end of the discussion. "Best practices" for critiquing manuscripts will be reviewed at the first meeting of the session.
1:00 pm: Meeting adjourns
